When is it the right time to replace your carpet?

Carpets have an approximate lifespan of five to ten years. The lifespan of a carpet depends heavily on the quality and the amount of foot traffic that has used it. Lounge and bedroom carpets will experience less wear and tear than a hallway or staircase. Regular cleaning can extend the life of a carpet, but eventually, it will need replacing.

Sometimes it can be glaringly obvious when your carpet needs replacing, such as a threadbare patch. Still, other signs can be more challenging to notice. Here we have the six main signs that your carpet needs replacing, so you can check these out within your property.

Stubborn stains

Stains can be very problematic. Depending on the carpet fibres and the type of stain, it is possible that even professional cleaning cannot help. Some stain-removing techniques can also cause permanent damage to your carpet, leading to the carpet needing to be replaced. Suppose you have a stain that cannot be removed using a professional cleaning service. In that case, your only option will be to replace the carpet and underlay.

Mould problems

Mould can be hidden on the underside of the carpet and within the underlay. Households with pets or children can be at most risk with children spilling liquids and pet “accidents,” leaving the carpet and underlay damp.

Typically you will notice an odour in the room, dark patches on the carpet, or stains. If you see these, you must replace the carpet without delay. Mould is dangerous and can increase the risk of asthma and other respiratory conditions.

Matting material

Matts or flat spots occur when the fibres have lost their integrity and “explode”. Areas of high foot traffic are most prone to this, and the type of fibres in the carpet can also be part of the problem. Some carpet types are more prone to this than others, so it is wise to take advice from a carpet supplier to ensure your new carpet does not suffer the same fate.

Foul smells

Carpets with bad smells usually have been subjected to organic matter such as water, milk, juice, pet accidents or food. If it is food or drink based, it could rot underneath your carpet, causing unpleasant smells.

Liquids such as water and milk will encourage the growth of mould and mildew. Professional cleaning can sometimes improve the situation, but a carpet replacement is the best option for peace of mind and to remove the smells permanently.

Interior design

It could be as simple as falling out of love with your carpet colour or pattern. You may be redecorating the whole room, and the carpet no longer fits the intended new theme.

Replacing the carpet will instantly spruce up a room even if you are not intending on redecorating. If you want to sell your property shortly, a new carpet will undoubtedly increase its saleability.

Allergies

Old carpets are harbourers of dust, mites, dirt and other allergens. Should you have a hay fever or asthma sufferer in the house, you will already be vacuuming regularly and cleaning your carpets, but that may not be enough. To improve the air quality with a guaranteed result will involve replacing the carpet entirely. Many new hypoallergenic fibres available should alleviate the problem for many years.
